LAKE GWELUP - REIMAGINED
a local landscape, interpreted through art
Spanning approximately 50 metres through the Big W corridor at Karrinyup Shopping Centre, this mural installation draws inspiration from the landscape and natural contours of nearby Lake Gwelup.
The artwork is based on a topographic map of the lake and surrounding area, transforming its distinctive shapes, pathways and layers into an abstract visual composition. The design flows continuously along the corridor, creating a sense of movement and connection while reflecting a place that is familiar to the local community.
Developed as an artistic installation for the advertising walls between campaigns, the murals ensure the space remains visually engaging while celebrating the character of the surrounding area.
The Design Inspiration
Topographic maps use contour lines to represent changes in elevation, landforms and the shape of a landscape.
For this design, the topography of Lake Gwelup was simplified, enlarged and abstracted to create a layered pattern that stretches across the full length of the corridor. While the finished artwork is contemporary and graphic, its forms remain connected to the geography of the lake that inspired it.
